Medium grain ballast closely matches the visual weight of prototype crushed stone ballast at HO scale, and the larger granules are also effective for gondola loads, gravel piles, and aggregate material details. Standard gray is the most commonly used ballast color at HO scale, accurately matching the granite and trap rock found on prototype railroads.
