Fine grain ballast is calibrated for accurate appearance in N, Z, and smaller HO scale scenes, where it simulates the fine-crushed stone or cinder beds of prototype trackwork. Brown ballast represents warm-toned crushed limestone or sandstone, common on midwestern and southern prototype railroads.
